An ICON because...

It's no secret that humanity is fascinated with extremes: oldest, youngest, tallest and shortest are some of the most iconic records, the ones that never fail to amaze us.

The embodiment of these superlatives is Robert Wadlow, the "Giant of Illinois" who stood at an incredible 8 ft 11 in (2.72 m): taller than a grizzly bear standing on its hind legs.
Although he had no sensations on his feet and required leg braces when walking, he never used a wheelchair.

Born in 1918 to average-sized parents, Robert outgrew his father's height when he was only eight.

He would soar (quite literally) to international fame in the 1930s: he toured the US with his father, and continued to grow until his tragic death in 1940, at only 22 years old.
Interestingly, it's likely that no one will ever grow taller than Robert. Why? Find the answer here!
