An ICON because...

It’s no secret that scaling the world’s highest mountain is a perilous and potentially even deadly endeavour.

What’s less known are the other figurative mountains that some must overcome before even making it to Everest’s base camp.

Whether it’s pushing back on traditional gender stereotypes, dealing with domestic abuse or simply raising the funds to cover the substantial costs, Lhakpa Sherpa knows such challenges all too well.

She became the first Nepali woman to successfully ascend and descend Sagarmatha (as Everest is known in Nepal, meaning “Goddess of the Sky”) in 2000 – a feat she has achieved nine further times since.
