The earliest props managers were the skeuopoios of classical Greek theatre, which developed into the art form we'd recognize today around 500 BCE. These craftsmen were hired by the Khoregos – a wealthy community leader who acted as financial backer and producer – principally to make masks for the actors, but it is likely they were also responsible for making or sourcing other stage property.
