Founded by Ram Barkai, the International Ice Swimming Association (IISA) was formed in 2009 with a vision to formalize swimming in icy water. IISA's passion is swimming in icy waters in every location possible around our globe. In order to allow for that, IISA has put in place a well-considered set of rules to allow for maximum safety measures in this extreme sport and to regulate swim integrity in terms of distance, time, conditions and safety.
The farthest ice swim recorded by the International Ice Swimming Association® for a male swimmer is 5 km (3.1 mi), swam by Krzysztof Gajewski (Poland) in a lake at Kopalnia Wrocław near Paniowice, Poland, on 12 March 2023. Gajewski completed the swim in 1 hr 24 min 43 sec. The average water temperature was 4.84°C (40.7°F).
