And it’s pretty fitting that it’s right outside the Guinness World Records Museum, given that the honour has also earned the Caped Crusader a record title.

A ceremony to unveil the star, live-streamed by Variety and at walkoffame.com, was overseen by emcee Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Steve Nissen and attended by DC’s President, Publisher, and Chief Creative Officer Jim Lee and SVP & General Manager Anne DePies.

Also on hand was Guinness World Records’ very own superhero Adjudicator Michael Empric, who handed over the official certificate.

Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, said: “Batman is one of our most recognizable and loved cultural icons, so it comes as no surprise to me that he's been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“But this achievement also speaks to the powerful and growing influence that comic books have on popular culture - and few superheroes have had as long a lasting impact on comics, graphic novels, TV shows and movies. Congratulations, Batman.”

The Dark Knight’s star is the 2,790th to be unveiled on the world-renowned Hollywood Walk of Fame, which honours the biggest stars in TV, movies and music.

Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, said: “Fans from around the world will be thrilled to know that Batman will have his star dedicated next to the stars of television’s Batman, Adam West, and the co-creator of Batman, Bob Kane.”

Batman was created by Kane with Bill Finger for DC Comics and first appeared in 1939’s Detective Comics #27.

Of course, since then he’s appeared in countless comics, TV shows and movies.

He’s been famously portrayed by stars including Michael Keaton, George Clooney, Ben Affleck, and most recently, Robert Pattinson in The Batman.

His image is constantly reinvented, from the likes of West’s comedic crime fighter to Christian Bale’s brooding and tortured Dark Knight.

The character has earned plenty world records along the way too.

LEGO® Batman: The Videogame became the best-selling superhero videogame, while Batman: Arkham is the best-selling superhero videogame series.

1998 PlayStation game Batman & Robin also made history as the first free-roaming superhero videogame and the first open-world superhero videogame.

When it was released in 2008, The Dark Knight became the highest-grossing film release on IMAX as well as the highest-grossing midnight screening at the domestic box office.

The character also holds the record for most Oscar winners to play one superhero (Clooney, Bale and Affleck).
