An ICON because...

It can be hard to stand out when your entire species is superlative – but even among giraffes (today’s tallest animals), Forest makes an impression.

From hoof to ossicones (furry horns), he measures in at a statuesque 5.7 m (18 ft 8 in).

Born at Auckland Zoo in New Zealand, he now resides at Australia Zoo in Queensland, which is owned by wildlife royalty the Irwins.

With 14 offspring and counting, who knows, Forest’s giant genes may yet pass on to the next generation, who might one day rival him for the crown?
