Andrea Horbinski

Andrea Horbinski holds a PhD in modern Japanese history with a designated emphasis in new media. Her book manuscript, Manga’s Global Century, is a history of Japanese comics from 1905 to 1989. She has discussed anime, manga, fandom and Japanese history at conventions and conferences and has published many articles on these topics. She currently serves as the submissions editor for Mechademia: Second Arc and on the board of The Journal of Anime and Manga Studies.

First manga magazine

Japan's first manga magazine, Tokyo Puck, was founded in 1905 by Rakuten Kitazawa, Japan's first professional cartoonist. Aimed at adults, it was popular and influential, featuring mainly political and then satirical cartoons. The magazine was published in Tokyo from 1905–15, 1919–23, 1928–41, and 1948.
