The tallest giraffe ever recorded was a Masai bull (G. c. tippelskirchi) named George, received at Chester Zoo, UK, on 8 January 1959 from Kenya. Standing 5.8 m (19 ft), he was so tall that his horns almost grazed the roof of the 6.1-m (20-ft) high Giraffe House when he was nine years old. George died on 22 July 1969.
